A Brief Profile
Mrs. Sushma Berlia, President of the Apeejay Stya Group and Vice-President, Apeejay Education Society is a leading industrialist, educationist and entrepreneur who combines her deep interest in education along with business acumen of the highest order. On taking over as the President of PHDCCI on December 21, 2005, she became the first ever lady in history to head any multi- state Apex Chamber of Commerce in India.
Inspired by her father Dr. Stya Paul, Chairman Emeritus, of the Apeejay Stya Group, she took to business and industry in 1989, and as President of the Group today, has not only consolidated but also expanded the existing businesses of the Group and initiated many successful new ventures. Today, the Apeejay Stya Group is a leading privately and closely held Industrial & Investment House in the country with alliances and foreign collaborations in Europe, Middle East and East Asia.
Mrs. Berlia plays a leading role in the Indian Pharmaceutical Industry and has been actively involved in taking up various important issues like drug price control, drug norms etc. with the government and regulating authorities. She is also the President of the Education Promotion Society for India and has a keen interest in promoting value-based holistic education at all levels in the Apeejay schools and higher institutions, based on composite Indian culture and ethos for a responsive and responsible citizenship.

She is currently the President of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), a multi-state Apex Chamber covering 11 states of North India. She was also the first elected Lady Member of the Managing Committee of the PHDCCI.

Currently, Founding member and President of Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) – a body of educational entrepreneurs, eminent educationist, policy makers and thinkers to facilitate the academia, government and industry as a catalyst nodal agency for promotion of education in India and abroad. It will attempt to serve the issue of Access, Equity and Relevance, Quality and explore globalization opportunities emerging abroad and within the country.

Honoured by the Punjab Technical University (PTU) in September 2005 with a special Citation for her ‘Outstanding contribution to the Society & Economy of the Country’.

Instrumental in setting the Apeejay Stya Education Research Foundation (ASERF). ASERF, which serves as a think tank for analyzing the emerging trends and technologies of education, will become a repository of information on education and conduct research in new educational methodologies while collaborating with premier educational institutions in India and abroad.

Instrumental in initiating and organizing the first Global conference on education titled “The Higher Education Summit – Roadmap for the future” organized in collaboration with the UGC & FICCI in Dec 2004, and was the Theme Presenter at the meet.

Nominated by the PHDCCI to represent 'Delhi Government Working Group on Technical Education’ for the formulation of the 10th Five-Year Plan (2002- 2007).

Represented India at the UN World Social Summit held at Copenhagen (Denmark) in 1995, at the invitation of the International Chamber of Commerce and International Organization of Employers, and delivered a presentation on the subject of ‘Role of Women at the Work Place’.

Currently, member of Parent Advisory Board of Stanford University, California, U.S.A. Recipient of Stanford Associates Award of Merit from Stanford University, California, U.S.A., 2005.

Nominated to represent companies affiliated to the ‘Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India’ (OPPI) in the IFPMA (International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Associations) Internet Task Force. Attended a symposium in Geneva in October 2000 in that capacity.

Nominated to represent India at the ‘Commission on Biotech Society’ by International Chamber of Commerce.

Active proponent of close alliance between industry and academia. Nominated on the Joint University Grants Commission – PHDCCI Group of ‘University-Industry Co-operation’.

Supported the setting up of the first Innovation Centre of the Confederation of Industry in India (CII) under the CII TDBT NET programme at the Apeejay Institute of Management, Jalandhar, affiliated to Punjab Technical University.
