The Chamber was established in December 1905 as the Punjab Chamber of Commerce and Industry to serve the cause of trade and industry in undivided Punjab. Since then it has traveled a long distance and now serves ten states of Northern Region India viz. Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Uttaranchal and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The acronym PHD stands for Progress, Harmony, and Development.
PHDCCI has a membership of more than 1500 corporate entities including manufacturing units from large, medium and small-scale sectors, trading organizations professionals' etc. The PHDCCI represents a wide spectrum of Industrial servicing and Trading activities including chemicals, engineering and light engineering, textiles, food processing industry, consumer goods, automobile component manufactures, financial and management
consultancy etc. In addition to direct membership, PHDCCI also serves
over 128 Association
Members. These association members represent 35,000 commercial and industrial organizations.
PHDCCI is represented on over 140 Advisory/Consultative bodies of the Central and State Governments. It is affiliated to apex bodies like the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), International Chambers of Commerce (ICC), Employers' Federation of India (EFI) and the All India Organization of Employers (AIOE).

The Chamber is managed by a Managing Committee comprising of senior industrialists of the region. It operates through Expert Committees and Task Forces consisting of nominees of member-companies, representing various interests, who pool knowledge and experience for the overall benefit of the business community. The various Expert Committees provide a platform to interact with other Members and Officials of the Central and State governments in order to formulate the policy recommendations and business response to government initiatives.
